True Love Stories Competition
Closing Date: 16 August 2010
THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED.
All entries were sent to Alan Pownall to read and judge. The winning story is Shadow by Melissa. Here is what Alan said about the story:
‘I like the fact that Melissa’s is about unrequited love. I wrote the song ‘Don't You Know Me’ about that feeling - how you feel totally helpless when you love someone so much and the feeling isn't reciprocated. A very true love story.’ Alan Pownall
Melissa's prize is a collection of Alan Pownall signed merchandise including a poster, an EP, a True Love Stories album, and a copy of Alan Pownall’s favourite book.
HERE IS THE WINNING ENTRY BY MELISSA:
SHADOW
I love him and have loved him for fourteen years. Sam, his name so simple yet to me is complex. Blonde hair and the bluest eyes you’ll ever see. His smile is one he only gives out to few people, I not being one of them. He’s tall and well built. Brave and strong. Everything a girl could ask for, all rolled into one.
He looks right through me, as if I’m not there. I am a mere shadow in his world of light. He’s the rose and I’m the thorns.
One day he will look at me. But that day it seems is far away. Until then I hide in the hood of my jacket, waiting patiently for him to dare a look.
My train of thought about him could go on forever. My love for him it seems will never die. Each time I see him with a different girl it kills me a little bit more inside.
I see Sam as I dream and I see him everywhere I go. A heart thumps in my chest and my throat swells to a point where I can’t speak, just by one look at him. My secret love.
Sam had dumped into me. Well more like pushed me onto the floor. My hood had felt down, reviling my face but I all ready knew he couldn’t see me, not even now, the only time I’m noticeable.
“Sorry” he mumbled as he reached for my hand.
As he helped me to my feet my heart pounded in my chest, my throat swelled to the extent that I feared I would never speak again. He looked straight at me. His clear blue eyes looking straight into mine.
“Do I know you?” he asked.
I already knew he didn’t. I sit quietly in the back of most of his classes. Hood always covering over my head. No one dares to sit by me or try and talk to me. It like I have a shield around me warding them off.
“Do I know you?” he asked again.
“No” that one word was barely a whisper.
I didn’t wait around any longer. Yes I did want him to see me but I wasn’t brave enough to try. I know what he would see. A girl with long black hair and eyes as dark as the nights sky. Maybe he would think I was pretty. Maybe he would think I wasn’t. That risk I could not take.
I returned to my shadows. Hood drawn once again.
“Who was that?” one of Sam’s friends asked.
“Nobody” he replied.
“The girl in black” I heard him whisper just before he left for class.
That is all I will ever be to him.
I am the shadow that cowers in the darkness. In love with someone who is constantly in the light.
