London Word Festival - Book Reading
Joe Dunthorne, Joshua Ferris and Richard Milward
Thursday 28th February, 7pm - 10:15pm, Bardens Boudoir, Dalston
When I think back to the Dalston book reading with Joe Dunthorne, Joshua Ferris and Richard Milward, the one thing that sticks in my mind most is the laughter. The audience seemed to enjoy the readings so much, I've never heard laughter like it.
All three books; Joe Dunthorne's hilarious
Submarine, Richard Milward's laugh-out-loud novel Apples and Joshua Ferris' tale of the random lives of office workers in Then We Came To The End seemed to come alive when their authors read them the way they are supposed to be read.
The first reading came from Richard Milward, who is in the process of writing his next book. He read the first chapter from "Apples" in a rather appealing mask with a huge mouth. Enough said, I think.
Joe Dunthorne also chose to read his first chapter (
read it here!). As those who've read it know, Submarine is very funny anyway, but Joe reading it in a slightly monotone voice made it somehow pure genius. The way he spoke made Oliver Tate's feelings easier to understand and fitted the book really well.
Joshua Ferris, on the other hand, decided to tell us about a character called Benny using three short excerpts - and I've never heard of a better way to use quotes from the first two Godfather films than Joshua does. Just the first two, though - you can make up your own mind why!
All in all the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I certainly have never been to an event quite like that, and I think jellyellie and Lily of Team SB equally thought it was an amazing opportunity.
