Before the day of the election, I hadn't shown an active interest in US politics. Every now and then I'd watch features about it, and I did follow the news and read articles when it was the choice between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for leadership of the Democratic Party. However, as the day grew closer I felt a sudden desire to try and understand the political framework in America and how the election may affect the rest of the world, particularly here the United Kingdom.
My new-found obsession with Obama only really sunk in on election night, when I decided to watch the coverage on the BBC till a ludicrous hour, at which point I fell asleep with the television still beaming. I stirred at around four, after my excitement prevented me from a deep sleep, to see a defeated John McCain giving his speech. I was elated.
Sadly, I didn't have time to find and watch Obama's speech before I had to leave for school, but the moment I arrived in my form room I logged onto a computer and read the transcript instead. Obama's speech did not have as big of an impact in word format, but I was still ecstatic about what this speech meant for the future of the world.
I'll be interested to see how Obama does in the years to come, but for now the outcome is a brilliant thing. Go Obama!
