Rebecca: This US election has really captured my attention

By Rebecca   / Spinebreakers Crew

I don’t pretend to know anything about politics and normally I would say that they bored me but this US election has really captured my attention. It caused me to read the political pieces in the newspapers for one of the first times in my life and even prompted an evening of babysitting the night of the election to be spent flicking through news channels, anxiously waiting for any new information instead of watching a film I liked on another channel.

I don’t know what it is about Obama that has inspired this change in me but even by looking at a picture of him it provokes confidence and hope. He has the power to unite us as proven by people all over the world, dancing and crying for joy at the result. I truly believe that these next few years will see an improvement in the world as a result of Obama’s presidency. He will speak out for all those who cannot be heard. Even by writing this it brings a smile to my face at the thought of what is to come.

I don’t know if you have seen is speech but I recommend it. His words are so powerful that they brought tears to my eyes. They were full of optimism and there was something so moving about how he got over 50,000 people to chant ‘Yes We Can’. It was refreshing to hear a presidential speech that talked about the people and barely ever himself. It was a speech full of grace and selflessness. If you do not want to watch the entire 17 minute speech, just watch the last 5 minutes as he tells the story of Ann Nixon Cooper and I promise you, you will not be disappointed and will come a way as moved as I was.

It was an historic day and I won’t forget it. However the fact that his speech was conducted from in between bullet-proof glass makes me worry for the future. It’s always the peacemakers that get hurt….
