What Might have Happened Just before Chapter 3 Begins

The smallest star fidgeted, and his elder friends nudged him and told him to keep still. But he couldn’t. Peter Pan was darting uncertainly around the Darlings’ House, resting on the chimney one minute, skimming across the roof tiles of a house two streets away the next, the little flickering light that was Tink following him every minute, of course. The little star had watched Pan every moment he could, because being who he was, he was rather frightened of everything and to the star, Peter seemed awfully brave.

There was an angry, continuous bellow coming from the house. All the stars leant forward to listen – it was a miraculous sight, I wish you could have seen it too. But only Pan saw it, and he wasn’t properly watching either, he was poking his head down the chimney curiously to hear more, and resurfaced with a sooty, black face that was grinning wildly. The star grinned back – it was going to happen! Pan was to get his shadow back, tonight! Tink went mad, whirling round in little circles until Peter grabbed her and quietened her, which set her in a temper, let me tell you.

There was a frightful whimpering around the back of the house. The star pulled a face. It wasn’t one of those… dogs, was it? Those big, horrid things with far too much hair. Then the door began to open, and every single one of the stars twinkled happily like someone’s eyes when they know a joke that you don’t. Through the door emerged a very pretty woman who tripped delicately over the snow, followed by a red-faced man copying the move. The stars watched this with interest, whispering to each other, and the smallest star was trying to push his way through to the front, where he could only just see the opening scene. Peter Pan waited tantalizingly, hovering just above the window, with his feet higher than his head in the air and his hands linked together so that his chin could rest on them. The smallest star could stand it no longer. He took a deep breath, and screamed at the top of his voice,
“Now, Peter!”
