 Aspiration journey

By Max Elsworth  / Spinebreakers Crew

A cold wind blew through the tunnel, and the roaring sound of metal and gears approached a rather stressed Charlie. As the doors opened, baring her bag covered in green peace badges, and her random assortment of antique jewellery hanging round her neck, she stepped through onto the beastly train.

“I might still make it on time, go northern line go!”

As she moved her eyes from the underground map to the window she noticed all the people in her carriage were all old men, dressed in expensive suits, and all possessing quite amusing moustaches.

She caught sight of a woman, plastered from head to toe in vibrant colours, and had various badges pinned to her painfully bright clothes. Her face was disguised behind a long hood. Charlie looked away sharply and tried to relax for a while, and everything became a bit blurred.

“What? What’s going on, bloody hell?”

As she looked around in amazement all of the old men on her carriage had suddenly disappeared. All apart from their expensive clothes which were now being worn by big pigs. They were all wearing the expensive bowler hats and were smoking the rich cigars that once belonged to the clone-like business men.

Charlie sat up and gazed at a spectacular sight, as these pigs all conversed and threw money at each other, whilst examining their golden watches with a greedy look on their face.

“Shut up, or I’ll fire you” snorted one rather fat pig, and the other burst out into hysterics. Because of the unorthodox situation, Charlie didn’t realise the woman in colourful clothing had disappeared. But she wasn’t a pig, she was just smaller, and still had her face covered.

The small figure approached Charlie, and when she reached Charlie’s knee she pulled off her hood.

Charlie’s already shocked face, twisted in horror at the sight of the woman’s face. She wasn’t a woman she was just a girl, but not any girl. It was Charlie but as a child. “What is going on?” but before Charlie could finish the young girl raised a finger to her mouth to prompt silence. As she did this she took out a folded piece of paper and gently placed it in Charlie’s bag. There was a sudden flash.

Charlie opened her sore eyes and found herself sprawled on the floor of an empty train, the pigs, the old men, the young girl were all gone.

Half an hour later when she had got herself together, she walked her way to an old grey metallic building, and climbed the usual stairs she always climbed.

“Charlie, you’re late get in here” bellowed a red faced short grotesque man, who stood behind a set of double doors.

She sighed then followed him down a corridor, whilst looking around she saw several of the men in suits from the train. Charlie and the stubby man entered a small white room. She reached into her bag for her work keys, but clenched onto a piece of paper instead. “Oh” she whispered. As she pulled it out and opened it, she discovered they were resignation papers, the message was clear. Without any consideration, she placed the papers on the desk in front of her, turned around, and marched back towards the double doors.
