The Beauty Pageant

By Steph Watson

Leigh was entering a beauty pageant in the USA, which included loads of trophies and needed a talent as well. Even though she was very excited as she browsed on www.littlemisspagent.com she froze as she saw her competitors, they were gorgeous brunettes and natural blondes. Her mum said, “You will stand out then”

Leigh always got compliments saying she looked older with her bleach blonde hair and long pink nails; she was a big poser so something like this usually wouldn’t be that hard, she loved posing for people. This was different though, in the USA you could get noticed and in a few years maybe be as big as Jordan.  She kept saying to her mum “I have to be perfect.”

Leigh was nearly 13 and had been cheerleading so she got one of her dance teachers to help her with a new routine for her talent in the pageant, she done a fabulous job of her routine. She practised for the next 3 weeks then the day came. Her Family got up at 6am and left for the airport at 7.30am for their flight to the USA at 10am. After they put their luggage in the hotel they went clothes shopping and saw a lovely pink dress with diamantes on it. “It’s gorgeous!” Leigh screamed. When she tried it on, it was the one for her, mum said; she also bought a matching pair of shoes. Leigh and her mum went back to the hotel; Leigh practised her walk on a talent routine for 6 long hours and then went to bed.

The next morning when she woke up “its today! Its today!” she shouted, she got dressed and went straight down stairs to get hair and make-up done then back up stars to get changed. Leigh’s mum and dad where running around everywhere getting everything sorted for her big day. When the pageant finally started Leigh dazzled on the stage, Leigh won Talent and Miss Sparkle. Finally at the end of the pageant, the winner was announced little Miss Beauty Teen of the year goes to Alisha Watson. Leigh was disappointed. After the pageant one of the judges pulled over Leigh’s mum and told her the only reason Leigh didn’t win was because she was too fake – like a Barbie doll.

That is why you should accept yourself for who you are, you don’t need lots of make-up and hair extensions to be beautiful.
