About a Boy

Nick Hornby

Stacy Reeve's Review of About a Boy

By Stacy Reeve / Spinebreakers Crew

I have learnt that you should always read a book before watching a film. That is where I went terribly wrong.

Upon reading About A Boy I already had a pre-prepared image of the characters; this was to such an extent that the sonorous voice of Hugh Grant could be heard ringing through my ears and I had this vision of Nicholas Hoult ambling along as young Marcus.

It seems that the film has missed out vital elements of the book that make reading a much more enjoyable hobby than watching a film will ever allow. Writing allows the author to develop characters much more deeply than film provides and you really gain a sense of empathy for eccentric characters such as Marcus.

Personally, I feel the character Ellie was a main component of Marcus’ life and this was integrated into the latter parts of the book notably well (unlike the film, but enough about that.)

Overall, About A Boy is an enchanting read but just don’t follow the same route as I did, always read the book before engaging in the film!
