Inside King Dork: an interview with the main character's mad dad
By Jade Hunter / Spinebreakers Crew
Little Big Tom is Tom Henderson's eccentric stepdad. His favourite catchphrase is "Rock and Roll" and to Tom Henderson, "[he's] a full-on hippie, though. He'd say 'former hippie' probably, but that's too fine a distinction in my book." Let's find out shall we? I was lucky enough to catch up with the man in question for a little chat about life being a hippie stepdad.
Welcome Little Big Tom. Sorry, can I call you that?
I'd rather you didn't! (laughs) Big Tom or even just Tom is fine, I don't know where you got the 'Little' from though.
Very well. Tom, let's get this cleared up. Are you a hippie?
Well, I wouldn't say I'm still one. I'm a former hippie. When I was younger I wanted to take over the world and make it a sort of hippie jungle, but now I'm just happy living my rock and roll life!
Speaking of the term 'rock and roll', what does it mean to you?
It just means 'fantastic' or 'way to go!'. It's just a term that I use to tell everyone who wants to listen that I'm happy about the event happening at the time. It's a great phrase - I use it all the time.
So I hear. How do you cope with being a stepdad?
With the little Dude, Tom I mean, it's pretty good. He's a good kid you know, very clever, streetwise and very different to his sister Amanda. I don't think she's very fond of me at all. I do try to get on with her, but I don't really know what she likes to do. With Tom, at least we have rock and roll in common You know what I mean!
What's your favourite food?
Definitely Mac and Cheese. My partner Carol loves it when I make it. I must say, I do make a mean Mac and Cheese.
In your opinion, what's the best song ever written?
That's a difficut one. I'm a big fan of The Clash and The Jam, but I'll have to say Starman by David Bowie. He's a legend! Rock and roll!
Lastly, what's your favourite holiday destination?
I don't go on holiday much, I like the USA. The USA is my holiday destination! Haha!
