Bury your fears on Sorry Night
By Max Elsworth / Spinebreakers Crew
“When dark creeps in and eats the light,
Bury your fears on Sorry Night.
For in the winter’s blackest hours,
Comes the feasting of the Vours.”
The Devouring – Sorry Night by Simon Holt The Devouring (although your typical teen horror/thriller) is captivating and superbly chilling. It exceeded my expectations with its wonderfully dark, hellish and sinister plotline. Although the horror may seem rather tame and puerile at times; it will have the reader grimacing when faced with a Vour, in suspense as the bloodcurdling plot unfurls and engaged throughout.
The Vours are black shrouds of evil that exert all of their devilish energy into fiendishly living off of the fears of their victim. Reggie is a horror geek, along with her trusty friend, Aaron. She is the daughter of a lonely and distant father and the sister of a possessed brother. After finding an odd journal that she becomes obsessed with, she and Aaron begin to face their fears accordingly with the book. It is not long before Reggie, Aaron and Eben (the library owner) embark on a quest in which they search for a way to relinquish the grasp of a Vour that has accurst her brother.
For those who appreciate the older horror classics, The Devouring may seem a tad juvenile. It is more befitting of a teenage audience that appreciates the subtleties of humour and adventure within its plotline. Although terrifying at first, the level of horror does ease down. However, this does not detract from my opinion of the book. For an easy read that is both chilling and adventurous, The Devouring really delivers in terms of an enticing plot, likeable characters and a vile evil.
