An ordinary guy who records his ordinary troubles in his diary
By Charlotte Vinall / Spinebreakers Crew
This novel written by Sue Townsend is one in a series of books featuring Adrian Mole, an ordinary guy who records his ordinary troubles in his diary. The novel is a comedy as it features his battles with a swan who he calls Gieguld and who fights for the love of his current girlfriend’s sister. The subplot is about his son fighting in the Iraq war and so the book does have a serious side.
For the first half of the novel, I found it quite hard to get into, partly due to the protagonist being middle-aged and so aimed at middle-aged readers who can relate to his problems. The second half soon got very interesting however, and there is even a shock death at the end! Overall I would recommend this book, however it is not really aimed at teenagers and so some of the book was quite hard to get into.
