I am a Sarah Dessen addict
By Ali Church / Spinebreakers Crew
Okay. I have to admit that I am a Sarah Dessen addict. I love how sweet her stories are, and how they always have a happy ending, and how the boys are all so lovely and a little bit flawed so they’re almost believable, unlike some sparkly-vampire-types I could mention. So, of course, I was quite happy to be reading this...
It’s about a girl called Auden (named after the poet) whose parents split up and she’s spent all her time studying in her mum’s house. However, to bridge the gap between high school and college she decides to go and stay with her Dad, stepmother Heidi and their new baby Thisbe (her dad likes weird, literary names). When she gets there, she realises life isn’t all about studying and makes friends and goes out and completely goes against everything her mum expects of her. She meets a boy called Eli and romance ensues, and I won’t tell you what happens because it’ll spoil it.
This book should probably come with a warning- if you don’t like sweet love stories or hate men then it really isn’t for you. Although it’s well written, and for hardcore fans like me there are clever little references back to her other books (everything she writes is set in the same area, and occasionally the characters meet and stuff, which is quite cool), it’s very obvious what’ll happen next and there aren’t any cliffhangers or “what’s going to happen?!?!” moments. Saying that, it doesn’t really need them.
The story flows nicely, and it’s easy enough to keep track of, and I honestly enjoyed reading it. So, unless you really don’t like love stories or are in to really serious stories, I would probably recommend it.
