Claire's review of Black Rabbit Summer
By Claire Duff / Spinebreakers Crew
Kevin Brooks was born in Exeter, Devon, in 1959 and studied in Birmingham and London. He had a varied working life, with jobs in a crematorium, a zoo, a garage and a post office, before – happily – giving it all up to write books. Kevin is the author of seven critically acclaimed novels including Martyn Pig, Lucas, Kissing the Rain, Candy and The Road of the Dead. His last two books Being and Black Rabbit Summer are both published by Penguin. He now lives in North Yorkshire.
Black Rabbit Summer describes the catastrophic consequences of one night at the fair when five old friends (Raymond, Pauly, Nicole, Eric, and Pete) reunite before they go their separate ways. You find out how their lives are changed forever by a murder, a disappearance and a talking black rabbit...
I really liked this story. It gripped me and I didn't put it down till I finished! It is a really good tale that deals with important issues such as drug-taking and homosexuality. Kevin Brooks handled this really well to produce a great story for teenagers. The characters in the story are all 16, but reading this at a mature 13 I can understand it. I would recommend it to people who are 15+, because of the maturity of some of the issues covered in this book.
