Olivia delves into the intense world of Black Rabbit Summer
By Olivia Scott-Berry / Spinebreakers Crew
Carnegie Medal shortlisted Kevin Brooks, author of Lucas and Martyn Pig pens a dangerously exciting novel which is bound to have you on the edge of the edge of your seat. Prepare to be taken on a roller-coaster ride of emotions and experience all the fun of the fair...
The shadowy story is narrated by sixteen-year-old Pete, just your ordinary teenager, who is catapulted right into the middle of an extra-ordinary situation. Pete's rambling, meandering narrative and the frustration as he fails to see what we can so clearly see adds to the tense, atmospheric tone of the book.
As the plot develops a more disturbing, gritty side of the novel can be seen and more elements are added, making for a thrilling, bumpy ride, which successfully throws off it's weak beginning and leaves you guessing.
And just when you think that the crazy cocktail of a plot can't get any thicker Brooks continues to surprise you, constantly keeping you on your toes with trepidation. You won't be able to put it down, each page compels you to read on.
All in all, Kevin Brooks successfully mixes the surreal with the mundane, making for a captivating and intense narrative which will completely suck you into the dark world of Black Rabbit Summer.
But beware, not for the faint-hearted, Brook's prerogative is to scare.
