Dana Thomas

Olivia unpicks Deluxe

By Olivia Scott-Berry / Spinebreakers Crew

Picking up this book you might expect it to be a glossy handbag-beach-read, with the lavish silver on black front cover and classy title. However, Dana Thomas’ enlightening book soon proves that it’s anything but, providing a revealing look into the world of luxury…

Thomas has written a book that is at once illuminative and thought provoking, subtly challenging the ethics and purposes of certain luxury brands. And although the secrets of the companies with “looser morals” are often casually laid down, the book seeks neither to condemn nor to condone, meaning that you are left contemplative but not guilt-ridden.

The novel is written with a completely unique technique, somewhere between fiction and fact (Faction, perhaps?) Whilst this enables you to read something with a bit of story, it also gives you the necessary statistics. However, if, like me, you don’t know much about economics, you could find some of the sections difficult and tedious.

Deluxe is a witty and thoroughly absorbing look into one of the most exclusive businesses around, that of the luxury brands. You will be left seriously considering your lifestyle choices.
