An interesting read

Gifted was an ‘interesting’ read. I enjoyed getting inside the head of Rumi (Vasi), exploring her thoughts and her world. What I didn’t like so much was the book, the story itself.
The Independent described it as ‘superb, brilliantly realized; the searing narrative is unflinchingly and tenderly written’. I wouldn’t. And to be honest, I disliked it with a passion. Maybe it was because I didn’t give myself enough time to get into it but after three chapters how much more time must one apply?
Some stated that it was difficult to get into and with that point I concur, yet I cannot pinpoint the reason why. I’m sure that it wasn’t the language or anything connected with it. Personally, if I had to give an answer on the spot I would say it was the storyline, not the complexity of it per se but the fact that it wasn’t really established. Events occurred with no real significance and the story lacked a certain flow that different authors do to include, that is necessary to keep me, if not many others, stimulated.
I have no doubt that Nikita Lalwani is a superb writer and in disliking this book, I am neither endeavouring to discredit or disregard her work and literary ability. It just wasn’t for me.
