A real feel-good novel
By Stacy / Spinebreakers Crew
‘Impossible’ really should be the title of my own struggle to enjoy fantasy books; of course I enjoyed Harry Potter (can that really be classed as fantasy though?) and I don’t mind watching fantasy films but when it comes to books I tend to stay clear. I find there’s always something about the cover that deters me but this is where the book ‘Impossible’ managed to succeed where others have failed, through the blending of fantasy with all the other genres I love. Therefore, I applaud you Nancy Werlin for keeping me gripped throughout the duration of my 8 hours flight to New York. Also, I welcome any of you who would snigger at the thought of a character called the ‘Elfin Knight’ to devour this book in one whole sitting - you won’t be let down.
‘Impossible’ follows the seemingly normal life of Lucy Scarborough as she gets ready for her prom night – average teenage situation, correct? Not in ‘Impossible’, as Lucy has a lunatic Mother and an ancient curse to deal with which is enough to challenge any 18 year old and on prom night disastrous events occur that leave Lucy with questions and determined to find the answers.
Beautiful, captivating yet gripping, Nancy Werlin has obviously crafted this novel from a deeply developed idea, as it uses the lyrics of the song ‘Scarborough Fair’, made famous within mainstream popular music by Simon and Garfunkel, to form the tasks that Lucy has to complete. (On a personal note, on the flight back from New York I watched the 1967 film ‘The Graduate’, completely unaware that the soundtrack on the film is comprised of songs by, you guessed it, Simon and Garfunkel. So, every time the song ‘Scarborough Fair’ was played in the film I was transported into my own little fantasy world!)
A real feel good novel it is the perfect introduction to the fantasy genre as it’s light and easy to relate to; the biggest question is will I be picking up a ‘real’ fantasy novel now? Well, give me some fantasy book suggestions and I’ll get back to you on that one!
