In the Country of Men

Hisham Matar

Charlotte reviews In the Country of Men

By Charlotte Vinall / Spinebreakers Crew

This debut novel written by Hisham Matar, includes everything which should be in a classic novel: a beautiful plot, loveable characters, suspense, drama, a mix of emotions and a fascinating read.

Not only is it a rip-roaring read, but a startling insight into the setting, Libya, and its contrasting ideas and values to England. It tells the tale of Suleiman, a nine-year old boy who has to care for his mother and her ‘problems’ whilst his father is away on business. But, one day, he sees his father in the market square, wearing dark glasses and acting suspiciously. Why isn’t he on the business trip? Is it really his father? Suleiman must face a much more frightening world, one full of corruption. The only way to find answers is to read the novel and discover the truth…

In the Country of Men is quite possibly the most beautifully written book that I have read, and with its unique storyline, I found it hard to put down.

Whilst it is not the type of book I would normally read, it is definitely one of my favourites and I recommend it immensely to anyone that wants a compact novel that shares the immense story of a nine-year old who has to face so much than most of us could ever imagine.
