'Percy Jackson: The Movie' Review
By Libby / Spinebreakers Crew
Watching ‘Percy Jackson: The Movie’ raised a lot of questions. Namely: when did this happen in the book? When did this happen in the book? Are they still flying? Why does Anabeth have brown hair? And, yes you’ve guessed it, when on earth did this major plot twist...happen in the book?
Okay so it’s fairly obvious that Percy has had the Hollywood treatment. And, hey, I’m all for the Hollywood treatment, the film’s being broadcast to a wider audience; it needs to be simplified so everyone can understand. But after an hour or so, enduring the repetition of ‘He’s the lightening thief’ ‘He’s the son of Poseidon’ 'All the Greek gods and goddesses are real and don't talk to their kids...' you’ve got to wonder, just how thick do the film producers think we are?
You know I would have been able to accept the plot deviations if it had served a purpose. If I had walked out of that cinema thinking ‘Well, it wasn’t true to the book, but they did a blooming good job’ then I would have been satisfied. Fact is, the film, in all honesty was an absolute shambles. It was as if someone had looked at the plot of the book and thought ‘I know, I’ll cram it all together, jumble it about a bit and see what I come up with’ Also they definitely realised there would be no sequel, there was a massive Kronos sized hole throughout the film.
The actors evidently didn’t have a lot to work with, the script was awful. Logan Lerman had a good stab at playing Percy; aside from having brown hair and occasionally looking like a deer in the headlights, Alexandera Daddario did an amicable job but it has to be said that Brandon T. Jackson, aka 'Grover', stole the show. Seriously, he was exactly how I’d imagined him and his mannerisms were hilarious.
Would I tell you to go and see it? Well, I’m guess all of you who have read the book won’t be able to stop yourselves from going to see it. Why not? At least you can talk about how awful you found it with everyone. To be honest, I wished I’d waited for it to come out on DVD. Then for it to be bought by one of my friends and have gone round to theirs' to watch it. That way, there wouldn’t be a copy of that thing in my house...
