First impressions are definitely not everything
By Maybelle Law / Spinebreakers Crew
First impressions are definitely not everything. Pride and Prejudice in its entirety highlights this.
At their initial meeting, Elizabeth Bennet is hardly impressed by the cold and aloof Mr Darcy, and in the circulating rumours of his involvement in the relationship between his friend Mr Bingley and her sister Jane, she becomes devout in her quest to discount him even as a mere acquaintance. However as things progress and truths are untangled, Mr Darcy and Elizabeth begin to enjoy the indifferent wit and the consuming debate that ensues at their chance meetings. The comedic proceedings of marriage and family involvement are underlying elements throughout the novel.
Pride and Prejudice is a book that describes how our prejudices and our innate pride can often act as a barrier to us ultimately reaching our heart’s desire. A novel filled with many humorous moments and extremely reflective of human nature: the manner in which we strive to hide our true feelings in the face of imminent love.
Definitely an educational novel: preaching of the importance that we learn the whole truth, and that common knowledge can span from a single rumour. We cannot always be dependable on our first impressions as they can lead us from the truth and away from what or who we want.
