Lucy's review of Ruby Red
By Lucy Freeman
This book is about a girl and her family who live in Africa but are not Afrikaans, they stand up for what they believe in and try to show that the colour of your skin doesn’t affect your personality or loyalty!
Her mother runs a controversial art gallery where she shows the work of banned black artists and her father is a lawyer who represents activists of the proscribed ANC. The police try track these artists down and stop them crossing at SOWETO to Johannesburg but her mother is too smart for them. Along the way, Ruby encounters a few problems with a hateful rich snob and a wonderful Afrikaans boy named Johann. This Afrikaans boy is different from the rest and soon he becomes Ruby’s boyfriend, although many people disagree with this relationship, this does not stop them. Soon after, disaster strikes and Ruby and her father have an ultimate change…
I really enjoyed this book; it is a cutting edge love story, thriller! Once I started reading it, I just couldn’t put it down; this book is amazingly powerful and made me feel as if I was there!
I was getting annoyed at the same parts as Ruby was and I nearly started crying at one point.
If you read this book, then either you are already an adult, or you soon will be. As you may be able to tell, my opinion on this book was very positive, this may be because I am a female of 12 years. I can understand why somebody under my age would not enjoy this book as even I found it a little difficult to understand at some points and maybe some males would not like this book because it is about love and feelings; however they may have liked it because it is very action packed!
