Allie's Review
By Allie Nicholson / Spinebreakers Crew
Sara is a girl with perfect skin, a body to die for, and a natural scent that means she never has to wear perfume. She’s talented, creative, and could be popular if she went in for that kind of thing.
But Sara dislikes her appearance so much that she’s planning to have major cosmetic surgery. And in the meantime she has repeated ‘accidents’, which she denies are attempts to injure herself out of frustration. But everything changes when megastar Jonathon Heat takes an interest in her.
Seeing as these days we live in a culture where what’s considered beautiful is almost impossible to achieve, this book is especially meaningful. The whole subject of face transplants is pretty gross at points, and for some reason I kept imagining Heat as a David Bowie type figure (which is kind of disturbing seeing as I love Bowie). Things start getting paranormal at one point which is a little confusing, but it makes sense in the end.
This book isn’t for the faint of heart. There are some quite gruesome parts, and the whole concept of identity and image is pretty heavy. But if you want a thought-provoking, sometimes funny and more often than not thoroughly creepy read, then Sara’s Face is definitely worth a try.
