MCM Comic Expo: Featuring Charlie Higson
By Olivia Scott-Berry / Spinebreakers Crew
One early Saturday morning, I and fellow Spinebreaker Sarah Jones dragged ourselves up to the London Excel Centre to attend the legendary MCM Comic Expo. Along with thousands of other fervent fans in all manner of costumes, we jammed ourselves onto the DLR, eagerly anticipating our chance to brush with our favourite TV stars.
Amongst a mass of weird and wonderful characters we queued up to receive our much-coveted stamps. Once inside we faced a bedazzling range of stalls, from doctor who collectibles to meeting the stars. Our first stop was at the Penguin table, to meet renowned comedian and author of the Young Bond series, Charlie Higson. On the subject of his latest publication, the graphic novel of the first Young Bond book, Silverfin, Charlie was really enthusiastic.
“It’s a collaboration with Kev Walker, a great comic book illustrator, so I’m pretty confident that it will be successful! Yes, it was a tricky process, very tricky, considering that you’ve got to fit the detail which you loved from your book into a few pictures. It was very difficult letting go of those little titbits which you love, but they had to be sacrificed, because the comic book format is quite different to my novels.”
We were too late to catch the Heroes conference, but we were able to catch a quick glimpse of some of the stars, including Ben Barnes (AKA Prince Caspian), Warwick Davis (AKA Willow or Professor Flitwick), Hannah (yes that’s right, from S Club), Andrew-Lee Potts (AKA Connor Temple, of Primeval fame) Terry Carter (Colonel Tigh from Battlestar Galactica) and a whole host of Heroes characters, from Greg Grunberg to Brea Grant. We were even able to get a quick picture taken with the man himself, David Tenant.
