Max's Character Profile
By Max Elsworth / Spinebreakers Crew
Oliver Tate is “the protagonist.” Articulate, morbid, and quite often rude is Oliver’s personality. Having relationships and crushing them are just a few of the many events that take place within one of the rather odd teenager’s average days. Reading “Submarine” is a strange experience, one that will often have the reader in hysterics, cringing, or shutting the book in disgust.
Oliver lives with his rather distant parents. Always trying to open them up to talk to him, Oliver begins to take measures that will leave the reader bewildered. Growing more distant from his family, Oliver begins to intrude in his mother’s personal affairs so as to unravel her secret relationship with a hippie surfing instructor. As Oliver climbs over new obstacles, he records all his experiences in his diary. This diary is almost like the soul of Oliver, his love for words, expression, and his girlfriend Jordana, are all carefully placed within this book of secrets.
“Submarine” will appeal to anyone with a slightly sadistic side, or anyone who just wishes to enter the mind of a rather unique young man. Be prepared to look through the eyes of a slightly twisted individual, and explore some rather disturbing themes, as well as discover the truths that Oliver uncovers about the people around him as he also learns about himself.
