A quirky short story with dusty humour
By Maybelle Law / Spinebreakers Crew
If you were to imagine what the production of the mind of an especially imaginative child would be, ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; would be it. The eccentric but wonderfully told tale of the ‘de-aging’ process of a baby born into the body of an old man who slowly youths into old age.
Think of the present complications that we face in our day with growing up and then multiply those complications with that of an unnatural cycle through life. The acceptance of oddity, quaintness of chance and realising that once-in-a-lifetime is really…once-in-a-lifetime graces this comedic tale.
Never satirical in its tone and always sincere, this short depiction of coming to terms with death, or rather birth and beyond, is a sweet and vivid exploration into the colourful mind of Fitzgerald. Where ‘full moons’ and ‘late-blooming harvest flowers’ burst out of the book; the reader can almost vicariously experience the emotions and events for themselves.
