Review of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
By Lily Dessau / Spinebreakers Crew
With no experience of F Scott Fitzgerald's writing, I opened this book with a sense of intrigue and excitement. As expected, I was thoroughly entertained by his brilliantly witty and eloquent approach. Fitzgerald has a great skill with words, and depicting an entertaining story, which makes this one of my new found favourite shorts.
The story is an imaginative tale of newborn Benjamin who enters the world an old man and ages in reverse, living his life growing younger. There is laughter and upset as Benjamin finds both difficulty and and in love, friendship and acceptance in society. As he struggles to live his life normally, this story- in an abstract way-proves that to be content in life one doesn't always have to conform.
I found this an easy and enjoyable read. Being a short story, I finished it in about an hour and a half, and thought it was a heart-warming tale even though Benjamin is not completely happy with life towards the end of it. I would recommend this to all, as the story and use of quite simple language can be appreciated by young and old alike.
