The Luxe

Anna Godbersen

Claire's Review

By Claire Duff / Spinebreakers Crew

Anna Godbersen was born in Berkeley, California, and educated at Barnard College. She has written several young adult novels under a pseudonym, as well as writing the Luxe series (she is currently at work on the third). She now lives in New York with her husband.

The Luxe follows the lives of many of New York's young social elite in 1899. You discover Elizabeth Holland's forbidden love and why her sister Diana is sneaking out, as well as finding out about Elizabeth's friend Penny's revenge.

I really liked the way this book began - it starts at the end while introducing you to all of the characters. This story is very suited to teenage girls, as the characters in it are constantly thinking of what could happen if their secrets are found out, and how to ruin each other's social status to eliminate the competition. It sounds quite similar to today when I put it like that! The plot seems quite complicated but is actually simple, which you understand when the book is over, and it grips from cover to cover.

Overall, I loved this book. I would recommend it to anybody who likes to know all the gossip about others before they know it themselves!
