High Society
By Kathryn Bell / Spinebreakers Crew
Filled with intrigue, scandal and mystery The Luxe doesn’t fail to disappoint. The beautiful girls and handsome boys that populate 1899 New York provide the perfect fuel for an outwardly pretty society with a tantalisingly corrupt core.
The prologue of The Luxe makes for the real mystery element, strangely opening with the funeral of Elizabeth Holland questions came flooding into my mind that were left unanswered until the very end.
As soon as the story starts I began to form opinions about different characters, good and bad, and speculated on their relationships together. When you read through the next few chapters, however, each one is from the viewpoint of a different character. Throwing new light on different people and even giving a totally different feel to the same sort of situation. This fun element is what gives The Luxe it’s unique feel.
I particularly enjoyed the ending because it felt so right and fitted well with the emotions of the characters. It really made the book much better for me as the mystery element was what really sustained me through the romance between Will and Elizabeth which I, personally, didn’t find very interesting. But that’s just personal taste.
I would recommend this to people who enjoy romantic novels, more than me anyway. Elizabeth’s quickly revealed death was a really interesting twist that would satisfy mystery fans also. Overall I really enjoyed this book and am actually looking forward to the next instalment: Rumours.
