A Story of Treachery and Lies
By Samara Straker / Spinebreakers Crew
The Luxe is not usually my type of read but who can resist a plot of treachery, lies and betrayal?
The characters in The Luxe are willing to set aside their true feelings to be loyal to their prestige, family name and reputation. Prior to this, the Holland's family secret must not be out! The characters are all tactful in the socialite game, lets analyse the three opposing competitions; Elizabeth has good looks, Penelope, flamboyant and Diana pretty and adventurous but the youngest of the bunch, lets see who wins...
The title 'The Luxe' spreads gloriously at the top of the front cover and looks reminiscent of gold. With a pretty woman (although she looks modern), posing with an extravagant 1899 style dress. Also, the omniscient third person narrative voice, which takes a view from each of the character's perspectives fits in to the objectiveness of royalty. Anna Godbersen has obviously done a lot of research. Columnists taken from 1899 newspapers introduce you to each chapter, so you can anticipate in to the royal behaviour, where everything is done formally.
The end is another set up for treachery and complicated underlying lies. I can't wait to read Rumours. The Luxe is a must -read and the haughtiness reminds me of my own royal heritage in Africa.
