Review of Then
By Emma / Spinebreakers Crew
Then – By Morris Gleitzman is a very touching story of the terrible Holocaust. Set in 1942, two children are being sent to a jewish death camp. The youngest child named Zelda is 6 years old, the eldest is Felix at the age of 10. Zelda is catholic yet is still in the same situation as Felix. They are all each other have left.
Once escaping the train on the way to their doom, they discover Genia, a bighearted woman who decides to take on the role as their protectors from the Nazis. These 2 little children went through so much and soon their lives seemed to be on the up, until a devasting thing happens in the town square.
The book is written with life like descriptions and really makes you feel what the characters went through. The friendship that grew between these two people was immense and unbreakable, no matter what. Nothing was going to tear them apart.
I would defiantly recommend reading this book, although its very strong on the insight of what really did happen during the horrible wars, it still reminds us of what life would be like today if we hadn’t have overcome the battles.
