Definitely a must read for all teenagers
By Maybelle Law / Spinebreakers Crew
This touching, borderlining-shocking story follows Clay, a normal teenager who finds himself faced with thirteen cassette tapes following the suicide of a girl in his year. Clay discovers that he indeed had a role to play in her suicide, and the mesmerising devastation that follows traps the reader in a web of pain mixed with the tender experience of growing up.
The simple weaving of the dual narrative of Hannah Baker’s haunting voice on the cassette tapes with Clay’s desperately confused thoughts cause ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ to be one of those books a reader does not forget.
In parts the book is shocking, but callously truthful and relatable to teenage readers undoubtedly going through the same trials and tribulations. Other parts remain absolutely heartbreaking and mind shattering. The emotional hell that Clay endures is completely devastating and then matched with Hannah’s often cold but factual tale into her secret and masked pain makes for an unforgettable and important life story.
Definitely a must read for all teenagers, especially in analysing the minuscule but complete ‘butterfly wings- effect’ we have on and in each other’s lives.
