A refreshing read 4/5

This, a more traditional vampire book than Twilight features real vampires- bloodsuckers that shy away from the sun. Another good point of this book is that the story is not from the vampires point of view, but from a Vampire "guardian" Rose Hathaway.
The 'Academy' mentioned in the title is a place where vampire guardians like Rose are trained, taught how to fight and kill. Rose's mother was an amazing guardian and she hopes to be just like her - so that she can protect her friend. After years of freedom from the Academy (by escape), returning is bittersweet for Rose and Lissa.
In this story there are two types of vampire. The mortal ones like Lisssa Dragomir, the vampire who has befriend Rose, and the immortal ones - that must kill for food. When, in a car accident Rose's family perishes, she doesn't realise the true reason that she survived. Maybe it wasn't just luck, maybe there was something else going on...
An interesting book. I really enjoyed how the Moroi vampires are portrayed as slightly weak - and need protecting from their stronger counterparts. A refreshing read.
