Review of Lungs
By Clarissa
Add new age folk, soul, synths, harps, drums, pianos and “Jessica Rabbit” and you get: Florence and the Machine. And after listening to the new album “Lungs” you WILL be left breathless. Florence is a breath of elysian air. One of the definitive voices of 2009, and I think that this is the year of the rabbit.
With her authentic and alluring voice Florence is one to watch. The gorgeous red head is a musical shaman, and has already won a Brit Award, played Glastonbury, The NME awards, and supported Blur. YouTube her now! No wait finish reading this. The “Jessica Rabbit’s” latest release “rabbit heart”, is a fantastic track, which shows Florence at her best. It’s a really golden song, reminding you of the 80’s and hedonistic heydays, which you’ll see if you watch the video, which is full of pearls, opals and opulence. The song swells with quirky crescendos, and elegance and you get to see the range of her voice, which is just awesome. I even think I heard a cow bell? The chanting chorus “raise it up”, is really catchy and also manages to morph the song into a dancey track as well. At the end of the song, Florence leaves you wanting more as she offers the last note to you on a platter. I suppose that links in with the sense of indulgence. Yet she tells us she has more to give. And she certainly does.
My favorite line is “Midas is king and he holds me so tight, turns me to gold in the sunlight”. The classical allusion (King Midas turned everything he touched into gold) with a modern twist, it really is exquisite lyricism.
With her fiery and phoenix-esque appearance, her voice is just that. It soars and explodes, dies and comes back to life ever stronger. It pierces through your heart, your lungs and your soul.
I love this woman. With her eclectic influences, Florence is clearly something extraordinary.
