 Beautifully crafted album

Review of Ocean Eyes
By Ayesha

‘I get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs’

Adam Young of Owl City on ‘Fireflies’, a song that reached the number 1 spot in the UK Top 40 Singles chart. The introverted Young began making music in the basement of his parent’s house, making him unique among the many current breaking artists. Owl City, in my opinion, can be described as the upbeat Death Cab For Cutie, the less dark- the more charming, perhaps, Postal Service.

The bubbly baby-ish synths in ‘Fireflies’ gives an unmistakably tranquil sensation, the spiky electro beats, the homely bedroom made feel. Although ideas and concepts of the songs are quite cliché, they are nonetheless enjoyable and warming. Lyrics of Owl City’s songs are romantic, catchy and lovable, although rather similar to each other. They epitomize the underdog’s point of view concerning love, the shy guy’s unheard opinion.

Owl City is soothing to listen to, their songs can almost be described as cutesy bubbly lullabies to keep you calm during those stressful coursework times or revision extravaganzas!

The dreamy and soft feel of ‘Vanilla Twilight’ can’t help but keep you tranquil even at the most grim of situations, not forgetting ‘Cave In’, one of the most dreamiest, yet catchiest songs on the album. The line “Every mushroom cloud has a silver lining” still remains in my head after weeks. Seriously.

All in all, Ocean Eyes is a beautifully crafted album by Owl City. My only complaint is that most of the songs on the album sound too alike. There’s barely any contrast between the songs as most of them have the same theme, tone and tempo.

Undoubtedly, the reclusive phenomenon and Myspace sensation that is, Owl City, will go far. Everyone needs an escape from songs of the complicated love sung by artists such as Lady Gaga, for a more idealistic and naive approach to love and life… having a bit of hope isn’t too bad, is it?
