Spinebreakers Legacy

Crossed

by Spinebreakers Legacy

By Georgina  / Spinebreakers Crew

Another enchanting tale from Ally Condie, continuing the matched trilogy. If you liked the first book then you will love this sequel. In the previous book it gave an outline to all the successes of the so called “society” but in “crossed” we are introduced to all the flaws present in a once perceived perfect world.

We follow the tale of Ky and Cassie once again after Cassie having mistakenly sent Ky out to the outer provinces into the danger zones of war. It mainly focuses on their tales of the present and few other characters are introduced. Even though the entire book is focused so precisely on these two characters, Ally Condie manages to give little away about Cassie’s mysterious soul mate Ky. Leaving not only Cassie but also the reader unknowing to his past.

In this tale we are shown Cassie’s reaction to change from what she perceives as normality. We are introduced to war and death, with many young dying in ways we could not have imagined to fit into this flawless society. She includes a harrowing tale of a group of young boys; in their innocence they climb a mountain in search of the pureness that is snow and return to not only have missed their chance, but to be shot down by the enemy airships.

Death and survival is cleverly entwined with love and longing, this book pulled all my heartstrings at once, with the sadness linked to war but also the devastating backgrounds we find many of these characters have had to go through. Once again, Ally Condie has created a masterpiece and this book will definitely be added to my top ten.
