Privacy Policy

So, who are we?

This is the Spinebreakers website for 13 to 18 year olds.

Where are we?

If you want to ask us a question about the website or what we do with stuff you tell us about yourself:

Write to us by email to hello@spinebreakers.co.uk

Or by post to:

Spinebreakers Privacy Policy,
Penguin Books,
80 Strand,

Or give us a call on 020 7010 3000

Who are you?

You know the answer to this one already, but we don’t. So sometimes we will ask you to tell us how we can get in touch with you and what you like and don’t like – your hobbies, your favourite authors, stuff like that.

What information will we ask from you and why?

Spinebreakers is your place to let the world know what you think about books so we would love you to give us your book reviews, comments and your own creative work but, before you can post anything, we will need you to register for a Spinebreakers account.

When you register for an account we will ask you to provide a user name, your name and your email address.  This is so that we can let other people who visit the site know which bright spark posted that comment or story or so that we can deal with any rude or inappropriate posts.

If you have not registered an account but ask to receive the Spinebreakers newsletter, we will ask you for your email address that so that we can send you the newsletter.

If you enter a competition, we may ask for further information such as your residential address so that we can send you your prize if you win.

You tell us about yourself – then what?

We will only use the personal information that you submit to us for the purposes described in this privacy policy or for any other reasons that you have specifically agreed to.  We won’t share your information with anyone else unless you give us your permission first or unless we have to do so for legal reasons.

Our approach to children’s privacy

We want children who visit our website to be able to take part fully in the activities and offers we provide. We also want to make sure that when we collect information from children we do so in a way that does not infringe their right to privacy. This Privacy Policy is designed to give you useful information about your child’s rights and the way we collect and use personal information.

We do not ask children to disclose any more information than is reasonably necessary to enable them to participate in an activity on our website and for us to improve the website.

We do not generally disclose personal information we have collected from children through this website to third parties. We may do so sometimes, in which case we will say so when the information is collected and you or your child will be able to inform us that you do not want us to do this. This will not stop your child enjoying the site, you or your child can simply tell us that you are happy for us to have the information so your child can take part in the activities we offer, but that you do not want us to pass that information on.

Besides what we describe in this Privacy Policy, we do not maintain any personal information obtained from children through this website in a retrievable form. The information we collect and how we use it

When children want to participate in activities on our website, we will ask them to register an account.  When they do this, we will ask them for a user name and their name and email address so that we can identify them, send them newsletters or contact them about their interest in Penguin (where they have asked to be so contacted) and so that we can credit them when they post any content.

When children enter competitions, we may ask for additional information such as their residential addresses so that we can let them know if they have won anything, send them their prizes and also let other people (such as other users of our website, the public and our own employees) know about our competitions and their winners.

We only keep the personal information children submit for these purposes until we have finished using it in these ways.

In effect, cookies tell us when you have visited our site and where you have been, but they do not identify you personally – just the presence of your browser. We use cookies to see how often people visit our site and what they look at. This helps us to know what parts of the site are popular – what people are interested in – so we can make sure we have more interesting material on the site in future.

If you don’t want us to be able to do this, your browser’s help section should be able to tell you how you can disable or filter cookies and how to arrange for your browser to tell you when you’ve been sent a new cookie.
